Our first day of shooting in the Large Hadron Collider tunnel @CERN went well last Friday. With a super tight time schedule and heavy security measures, we managed to capture soprano Claron McFadden, choreographer Lukas Timulak and 4 dancers on film. In the story Claron’s voice will lure our main character into the ‘gateway-tube’ and transform him and his fellow scientists into an atom particle…
Choreographer Lukas Timulak casted four magical dancers for the Symmetry project: Shirley Esseboom, Celia Amade, César Faria Fernandes & Joeri Dubbe. The dancers play CERN scientists in the film… Next week we start rehearsals @KORZO for our first day of shooting inside the actual particle collider tunnel LHC and the detector CMS in Geneva.
Choreographer Lukas Timulak is preparing for the film. With the wonderful support of the dance studios by KORZO in The Hague. We call this part of the choreography: “big bang ballet” for the climax of the film, when the physicality get strengthened, movements become bigger and bodies will jump-cut in space… Good for warming up… [also see rehearsal 02]
Currently we’re making these collages to pre-visualise certain details in the film production. In this image you see Claron McFadden on the ice landscape; some potential styling choices. Lukas Timulak lying behind her on the ice, going through a dance ritual… [image sketch i.c.w. Adriana Gerasimova]
Ruben van Leer did the direction assistance for Michel van der Aa’s recent 3D-film opera film production: Sunken Garden. Soprano Claron McFadden (who plays the role of a shaman woman in our Symmetry film), also plays Marinus in the opera live on stage. It was a great learning experience getting new technology, story telling and performance arts synchronised.
INSTRUMENT is the first short film in which director Ruben van Leer and Lukas Timulak collaborated. The film has been travelling world wide, shown at festivals. Recently it won 4 more awards, organised by the Fever festival: special award Wurth Museum, Inshadow, Magnetica and Octubre Corto.
We continue our artistic research and the theme of the real body, versus the virtual body in this short film, into the Symmetry project.
McFadden will also be playing the female role of Vala in Symmetry.

Intrument is a short dance film, directed by Ruben van Leer in collaboration with choreographer and dancer Lukas Timulak. This video shows some of the ideas of the film and served us to develop a creative language, also for the Symmetry project. In 2011/2012 the film is shown on festivals internationally.
